The Steelers and St George Illawarra Dragons warmly invite you to join us for the 2025 Peter Newell OAM Memorial Race Day, to be held on Saturday, 26 July 2025, at Kembla Grange Racecourse: A.J Bert Lillye Lounge.

 

This special event is a celebration and tribute to the life, achievements, and remarkable contributions of Peter Newell OAM, while raising vital funds in support of the Illawarra Cancer Carers.

 

Peter Newell OAM was a larger-than-life figure whose impact extended well beyond his immediate circles. Throughout his life, he was selflessly dedicated to service, leaving an indelible mark on journalism, rugby league, the club industry, and the broader Illawarra community.

 

Some of Peter’s most notable contributions include:

• Leading a successful community campaign in the 1970s to improve safety on the then-dangerous Mt Ousley and Appin Roads.

• Advocating for the establishment and sustainability of elite rugby league in the Illawarra.

• Playing a key role in the historic 1999 merger of the Illawarra Steelers and St George to form the St George Illawarra Dragons.

• Supporting and strengthening the Clubs sector, ensuring vital services and funding for local communities.

• Leading the Clubs industry's humanitarian response to the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami, helping raise over $3 million in aid.

 

Peter served the community in many distinguished roles, including:

• Illawarra Mercury – Journalist, Chief of Staff, Deputy Editor, Editor, and General Manager (1970–2000)

• Illawarra Steelers – Chairman (1999–2019); Director (1989–2019)

• St George Illawarra Dragons – Director (1999–2019)

• ClubsNSW – Chairman (2004–2019)

• ClubsAustralia – Chairman (2007–2018)

 

Since his passing in September 2020, following a courageous battle with multiple myeloma and acute myeloid leukemia, Peter has been deeply missed by his family, friends, colleagues, and the many people and communities he supported through his lifetime of service.

All proceeds to be donated to Illawarra Cancer Carers to support their mission of providing emotional, essential resources, non-medical care and research support to obtain a better caring environment for cancer patients and their families/carers in the Illawarra.
